20th Anniversary of Champion of The World - June 28th 1997

Were you there?

Twenty years ago on this day - 28th June 1997, almost 45,000 people gathered at the famous Wembley Stadium in London, UK, for "Champion of The World".

The event was organised by a small team of people including - Noel & Tricia Richards, Gerald Coates, Greg Lynn, Amanda Kindred (nee Collins), Jon Pac and Les Moir.  We were crazy enough to think that people would come from all over the UK and further afield, to celebrate our faith in Jesus Christ the 'Champion of the World' - and they did!

with flags and banners

great enthusiasm

and interesting hats!

The event featured many singers and dancers including:

The Wades

Sue Rinaldi

Matt Redman

Delirious?

Gerald Coates

...........and a much younger version of Noel Richards!

.........with the legendary ponytail,

singing the theme song for the event.

The video of "Champion of The World" was produced by Stephen Bennett from Australia. Click to view.

We were grateful to all of you who came along and made this such a wonderful day.

Since then, many others, inspired by what happened at Wembley, have gone on to fill arenas and stadiums around the world.

Long may the journey continue........

Noel it was an amazing event. I thank God for your boldness and your passion to Gloryfy Jesus at that level. Myself and the bus load I brought to Wembley with me were blessed and for me Personally it was a destiny shaper for God's glory. Noel -You and Trish have been a great blessing in my life and life of thousands if not millions . Hope to see you soon ... Sam xx

Wow I can't believe it was 20 years ago! I travelled down with people from my church in Wigan. I still have my Jesus Champion Of The World Scarf 😁. Congratulations on still producing fantastic music 20 years on x x x

Very happy memories of an amazing day - I was on crutches following an operation and nearly fell down the concrete steps more than once trying to dance! I got the knack of it in the end though! So many wonderful memories - especially the weather forecasts by Gerald Coates telling us that it was raining buckets all around Wembley-but not a drop on us! God's Great Umbrella was over us that day! I feel privileged to have been part of something so special - thanks for acting on your vision Noel.

I was there filming from the very top of Wembley Stadium, literally holding onto the struts. Exciting and slightly scary at the same time.

Was at this amazing event with a party from our Church. What a truly God inspired day. A little touch of what heaven may be like. Noel and Tricks did a wonderful concert at our Church recently. You are an amazing couple.

I came over from Germany with a friend and we loved it. Volunteered at Calling All Nations, too. Thanks so much for your faith and vision, Noel. You've left an indelible mark on a generation.

We, too, took a bus load down to Wembley. Lovely time spent together as a church family and the event itself was amazing. No one who was there will ever forget it. We still have a scarf as well. Matt Redman certainly looked very different 20 years ago! Wonderful day........thank you for following your vision.
